Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier

Last week we went to see the Maeslant Storm Surge Barrier. It was a mighty impressive sight! We never imagined it to be so enormously big. Beneath you see just part of one of the large steel gates. There are two arms that can close the waterway when a storm surge is expected. The pictures above show the view through the barrier. The waterway it can close is the main route to the port of Rotterdam. In the information centre there was a scale model showing both arms of the waterway and the way they work. In the first picture you see both arms slowly moving to each other and in the second picture the waterway is closed by the barrier.
Another look through the barrier and we see the little ferry approaching.

Shopping expedition

For years we have wanted to go to CentrO in Oberhausen, Germany. Last week we had Autumn holidays and we decided to go there on shopping expedition! One of the stores in the shopping arcade of CentrO.First thing we looked for was a bakery as we wanted to eat a "Kaiserbrötchen", a crunchy, tasty bun!Later we came across the "eating corner" in the shopping arcade with all kinds of little restaurants. One of the fountains as seen from the second floor.CentrO has two floors filled with all kinds of stores on both sides. Mostly selling clothes, shoes, jewelry and perfumes.Time for a coffee before driving home!

Some more Nijmegen

This is the bridge of my previous post as seen from the roadside. And here comes a closer look at the 15th century wall tower you can see in the background on the above picture. The following photo shows the bridge to the wall tower.
The next two pictures show the only remains of the castle that once stood on this hill. Only the two chapels of the castle remained.

Shadow shot Sunday

This weeks shadows I captured in Nijmegen. It was a beautiful sunny Autumn day when we were there and walked over the bridge to go to museum Valkhof. I noted the delicate shadows made by the bridge sideway.

At the end of the bridge we noted the beautiful forms in "shadow style" of the gate we passed through.Looking back at the entrance gate to Valkhofpark near the museum, I noted more shadows on the bridge.

Sundial on the square in front of museum Valkhof in Nijmegen.
A closer look at the sundial makes me wonder what's peeping down from the top of the sundial. Good thing my camera can zoom in and that's how I realized it is a tortoise peeping down from the top of the sundial.

It's so beautiful outside, especially when the sun shines and makes all those lovely Autumn colours shine!

Stairs with a tropical look

I loved the way they gave these stairs a tropical look by simply placing palmtrees on every plateau!

Catherine's World

In Nijmegen we visited the exhibition "Catherine's World". This exhibition presents miniatures of a late medieval manuscript from the Northern Netherlands.
The manuscript called "Book of hours" belonged to Catherine of Cleves. She asked an anonymous master to illuminate the book which he did with an eye for detail by creating an intimate world of devotion, demons and daily life in the late Middle Ages.
Awaiting visitors outside the museum is Catherine "herself" still looking really fantastic in her red robe after all these years. She ordered her captain to fire a cannon outside the museum, advising visitors to keep their ears covered and their mouths open a little bit to release the pressure caused by the firing. It was a mighty sight and sound! The exhibition takes you by the hand by first creating a sphere of those ages. This is done by human sized dolls dressed in middle aged clothing. A 3D movie showes Catherine explaining life in those days and telling about her book of hours. Then there were all those fantastic pages out of the book of hours. These pages are so beautiful that you could keep on looking at them for a very long time. The illuminator depicted holy scenes in the scentre of the page and in the margins he showed scenes of daily life in those years.
It is a world-class book of hours that was unlocked before our eyes in this exhibition! So fabulous we can recommend everybody to go and see.

Shadow shot Sunday

Looks like the shadow of my car has been parked inside the garage on this Shadow shot Sunday. It is a bright sunny Sunday once again with great shadows to catch. For more shadow shots pop over to Hey Harriet where Mr. Linky leads you to other players. Enjoy your Sunday!

Morning lessons?

This is what we saw early this morning. Looks like the black horse is instructing the white horses. LOL! Wonder what he is trying to tell them.

Road obstruction

On my way home yesterday afternoon I couldn't cycle on. The road was obstructed by a big crane. In fact there were three cranes all over the place where they are building a new school. In a way they appeared strange in the little town I cycled through. On the other hand they were a majestic sight against the blue sky and with the Autumn coloured trees on the side of the road they made a nice picture.

New neighbours

What fun! We have new neighbours across the road.
Kids in the neighbourhood came to say hello.
After many years with an unkept field in front of our house we now have 4 horses across the road.Munching grass and saying hi hi! Oh I'm very pleased with our new neighbours!
