Festivities end in drama

Today Queensday in Holland has ended in a drama. A car drove into the public along the route which the royal family followed. The royal family sat in an open bus and the car came through the public and bore into a monument, passing the royal bus very closely.

Just now there was a press conference on TV stating that 4 people died and 13 are wounded, some severe. My condolences go to these people and their families. This should not have happened at all and has put a blemish on this beautiful day. I feel for all those involved in this tragedy!

This morning we were sitting before the TV watching the festivities in Apeldoorn where the royal family was celebrating this Queensday. I was reading the paper while keeping half an eye on the TV when all of a sudden I realised something very disturbing was happening. A car drove through the public, past the royal bus and drove into a monument. How awful! At first we couldn't believe this was happening but after watching TV for many hours we realised it was true. A drama has happened!

These festivities on Queensday are a tradition of many years but today was special because 100 years ago the Queens mum was born. Because of that a parade would take place in Apeldoorn, similar to when the Queens mum used to be Queen.

Public buildings are flagging at half mast now, as this beautiful day has come to an awful end, most festivities are cancelled.

Another butterfly

In the tropical butterfly garden we also saw beautiful orange hibiscus. Very appropriate for today as we celebrate Queensday here in Holland. It's a public holiday with all kinds of festivities.

So dainty

This dainty butterfly glided over my head and landed on this leaf. Wow it was wonderful in the tropical butterfly garden in the zoo in Emmen. A little bit frightening too at first to see all these big and small butterflies flying around. In fact they even landed on visitors. Several kids in buggies didn't like it at all and even our bigger kids of 13 and 17 were frightened of all these flying beauties. Haha that made me laugh! Imagine they even left the butterfly garden because they didn't like it. LOL! For me it was fabulous, all these butterflies flying around in this beautiful tropical garden. My camera liked it even better and took many pictures which I will share here the coming days. Enjoy!

(Note: I think this butterfly is called the Postman Butterfly. If I am wrong please let me know.)

Largest butterfly ever

Today I saw the largest butterfly ever and at first I thought it wasn't real. Had to shake the tree it was on a little, to check this out, and yes it is a real butterfly for I noticed it moving! Glad it didn't fly away for then it would have really frightened me!

Just in case you're wondering: I didn't see this butterfly out in the open but I saw it in a butterfly garden at the zoo in Emmen.

Note: This butterfly is called Atlas Moth, just now I noticed the snake heads at both sides of its wings. Amazing! Do you see them?

Colourful shadows

At times it is even difficult to choose from te various shadow shots I made in the past weeks. The weather has been abnormally beautiful and sunny over here. You won't hear me grumble because I love it!

The other day I noticed this round table with all these colourful candles on it that are for sale. Because of the lovely weather the sales items were placed outside and that's quiet amazing for a wet country like Holland!

Home made

Little stalls like these can be seen when cycling around in the Dutch countryside. Here you can buy home made products by just taking what you want while putting the money in a little moneybox.

White blossoms

A little further on the route a snowy show of pure white blossoms. There were several rows of white blossoming trees. So beautiful. Wouldn't mind this kind of snowy show lasting a little longer but most blossoms will fall down within several days.

Beautiful blossoms

Cycling around a little yesterday afternoon I noted this pink blossoming tree. Standing beneath you can see how full with blossoms this tree is.

Shop window shadows

While walking through Tilburg I noticed these shadows in the shop window. The way this shop presented its new summer collection, against a sea-coloured background, was amazing. Well I liked it anyway and thought it would make a cool shadow shot.

Tilburg University

Yesterday my daughter and I went to the open day of the Faculty of Economics and Business Administration at the University of Tilburg.
This is part of the campus and I really liked the way it looked. The university is situated on the outskirts of Tilburg in a very green area. We had to be in the high building behind this round building which is the meditation centre on the campus. We attended two information rounds of the following Bachelor programmes: Business Administration and Econometrics & Operations Research. The programmes appealed to both of us and again I wished I was 25 years younger and able to do one of these studies. Another look over the campus.
The next picture shows the hall which leads to the lecture rooms where the information rounds were given. The university welcomed all visitors very friendly with coffee/tea and a piece of cake. Between information rounds they even provided a lunch which we could take outside in the available paper bag. The weather was perfect for a picknick on one of the large lawns on the campus.

Orange white butterfly

Came across this beauty in our own garden!
It even stayed put for me to take these pictures.

Update: A few days after taking this picture there was an article in the local paper saying that this butterfly is the male Orange-tip butterfly.

2nd Easter Day

Today is 2nd Easter Day in Holland which is a public holiday. On this day also one of our nephews did his first holy communion. It was busy in church with family and friends of all those children doing their first holy communion. After mass a coffee/tea buffet awaited us with some nice cakes to go along.Later a sandwich/salad buffet followed. It looked and tasted really good.
The weather was just right so we sat outside eating and drinking while enjoying good company in the sun.

Easter Sunday

We had a nice and quiet Easter Sunday. Instead of an Easter breakfast we went for an Easter brunch at home so that everyone could sleep in after a busy week. The weather wasn't as sunny as they promised us but still it was not bad. Just now the news mentioned that it hasn't been this warm at Easter in 25 years.
Our brunch consisted mostly of normal things like jam, ham and eggs. As a specialty I did bake off some brunch panini and bought an Easter bread. Raisins, nuts and almondpaste are added to this sweet bread which is covered with a layer of powdered sugar. The funny thing is that they call it Easter bread now but around Christmas they call it a Christmas bread. Oh well who cares it tastes good. Outside the little hens hatch well between the orange violins. As is a Dutch custom on Easter Sunday evening everywhere Easter fires are lit. Prunings are piled high in the weeks before Easter Sunday when the fires are lit around 21.00 hour. Most fires have a big tent nearby for the socializing part where everyone can have a drink or two. Cheers!

Happy Easter!

Came across this big Easter bunny in Bocholt, Germany. Good thing they showed it behind glass for it is completely made of chocolate. Mmmmmmmm it looked oh so pretty and oh so delicious!

You might have missed me and that's because somehow I don't feel like spending so much time behind a PC right now. There are so many other fun and not-fun things to do. The weather has been lovely for the past week and for Easter they forecast nice, sunny, warm weather! Just perfect as we have a long weekend here in Holland. Schools are always closed on Good Friday and here in Holland Monday is called 2nd Easter day so we have an extra Sunday too. Yippie!

Wishing whoever reads this a very happy Easter and enjoy the eggs but most of all have fun!
