"Nights of rain and stars"

In my mind I was on a very small Greek island this weekend. I bought this book "Nights of rain and stars" by Maeve Binchy last week after I received another positive result for an exam. Yippie I felt so good having achieved another certificate. In fact with this certificate the end of my studies is slowly coming in sight. Still have two subjects to do and though they might not exactly be difficult to tackle, to be able to make the necessary exams it will cost a lot of time to study the advised literature besides following colleges one evening a week. If everything goes as planned I might be able to start on the thesis in September.

OK enough about studies now about this wonderful book. Maeve Binchy really writes in an easy way about normal people and I love her books because of that. "Nights of rain and stars" tells about four strangers from different countries who meet, while on holiday on a small Greek island, when a tragedy occurs on this small island.

The story is about the difficulties these four strangers are trying to escape from and with the help of an Irish woman who lives on the island they eventually find solutions to their problems. This book made me part of their lives and problems and because the story was set on a small island in the Mediteranean it really sounded familiar. Even the bookcover reminds me of another small island in the Mediteranean that I knew oh so well.

Pity the temperatures outside were not the same as in the book for that would have been even better. Oh well wishful thinking as I can't expect that in January here in Holland.

Shadow shot - doll

This shadow shot thing is getting at me and in a way it has been an eyeopener for shadows.

When at the Viktor & Rolf exhibition I noted the shadows made by these dolls.

Photo hunter - chipped

This week's photo hunter theme made me think of the chipped wood path we had to walk over in the barefoot park which we visited when on holiday in the South of Germany.

Oh what fun! but not for me: I hated it and my feet were killing me walking over all these different kind of surfaces (chipped wood, grass, mud, little stones, broken shells, etc.).

A new beginning

Wasn't going to join this months Photo Challenge by but just now I was sitting in my lazy chair reading a good book and in between I noted the first signs of a new beginning in our garden.

The weather is cold but very sunny so I took the opportunity to take these pictures of a new beginning against a very blue sky.

Big doll house

This is what I liked best at the Viktor & Rolf exhibition. A big doll house showing all dolls of the exhibition. It was wonderful.Note the clogs this doll is wearing. Here's a closer look. They are beautiful and have V&R logo on them. Here's the same bride you saw from behind in my previous blogpost. Both the doll and the dress are beautiful! The "I love you dress". I think it's great. And this is my favourite collection. These dolls were turning around the whole time. It's called the Russian doll collection and in the original show just one model stepped on the turning stage like a dancing ballerina on a musical box. After that the designers stepped on the stage and slowly dressed her in eight layers of high fashion garments one over the other. Each garment filled with Swarovski crystals and lace. WOW!

Fashion exhibition

My daughter asked me to go with her to the Centraal Museum in Utrecht where she wanted to visit 'The House of Viktor & Rolf’, an extensive fashion exhibition presented by the famous designer duo Viktor & Rolf. As I am alway in for such things there we went to the exhibition.
Note that I am not at al fashion minded and hardly know anothing about fashionable dresses. But even though I am more of the casual and comfy stuff I really enjoyed this exhibition. In Dutch we say: "I looked my eyes out". Well see for yourself as I managed to take some pictures to share with you.Beautiful dolls, made to resemble the real models at fashion shows in Paris, are dressed in garments from different fashion collections. Above you see creations of the Upside Down collection. If I remember correct this was part of the No collection.Flowerbomb collectionBlack hole and White collection. The coat this doll is wearing is made of many, many bells and it is part of the Bells collection. During the real fashion show the bells made a slight chiming sound besides giving the coat a mystic, elegant and shiny effect. This dress is one of my favourites. It is from the Flowers collection when Viktor and Rolf created their first perfume. In the background they showed how the models dansed and swirled on the catwalk during the real show as if they were stunned by the perfume.

Shadow shot - bike

The shadow of my bike looks huge. Seemed to me a perfect picture for Shadow Shot Sunday. People did look questioningly at me, wondering what I was doing, as I had to put the bike in a slanting position to take this shot.

Photo hunter - hat(s)

For this weeks photo hunter I had to dive deep into old photo albums. Back to 1992 when we were on holiday in Gozo and our twins were swimming in the pool on the roof of the Calypso Hotel. I simply adored the little hat my daughter is wearing. Funnily enough she kept her hat on and he didn't mind wearing a cap. A few months later that was oh so different, for they didn't like wearing those party hats we put on their heads to celebrate their first birthday. They kept trying to remove them, making it hard to take a picture of both of them with a hat on. But we succeeded as you can see.

Another certificate

Oh I feel so good, just heard that I passed for my third Internal Control case. That gives me a mark of 7,5 on another certificate which I need if I ever want to finish my studies.
Internal Control has kept me busy since last September and I am oh so glad to put the books back in the bookcase for the time being. Hope they can stay there for good but I am still keeping my fingers crossed for the results of the two exams I did in December and January.

Special gift for special people

In January most organisations have a New Year Reception so that management and associates can wish each other a Happy New Year. This evening the organisation I work for organized a reception at the above party hall. It started late afternoon with coffee or tea and delicious sweets. To create a relaxed atmosphere there was a band of two playing guitar and singing old time favourites. Not too loud but just right so that everybody could chat along while enjoying the music.A little later there was this long table being prepared with enough food to fill everybody. And for the sweet ones under us there was a creamy, glass filled dessert waiting to finish of the evening. They never send us home empty handed so like all years there was a New Year's gift to take along in a box entitled: Special gift for special people!

A little bit of Spring

OK I mislead you, it's not Spring outside but inside. Since last week I noted all these Spring bulbs being sold in pots in large amounts in most supermarkets. Normally I don't like buying them this early in the year but this time I couldn't resist and simply had to get that Spring feeling. Besides last year I waited too long and when I thought the time was right all bulbs were sold out. LOL.

Also on this picture you see my favourite, sunny colours. Can you guess? And on the wall there is a little shadow painting I made on a fun evening with my sister-in-law and my daughter. Of course I tried painting butterflies because it is easier to catch them with a brush then with my camera.

Beautiful but cold

Though I hate this cold weather the photographer in me can't resist and keeps on taking pictures of all the beauty that can be seen outside. The following photo's speak for themselves. They were taken around noon last Friday when cycling home from my work.

Hey this is fun

It was a bright sunny day yesterday, a perfect day for a shadow shot, so I kept looking for a clear shadow and all of a sudden noted the shadows of these trees. After getting out of the car to take a picture I couldn't make it without being on it too, looking skinny and very tall. LOL. Hey this is fun, I enjoyed myself taking some shadow shots and I liked this one best.
