Fireworks

Not my favourite stuff but also a tradition on old year's day: fireworks! Our youngest has been looking forward to this day for a long, long time. Yesterday evening he went to collect his fireworks and this is what he got. In Holland fireworks are allowed on old year's day from 10 a.m. till 2.00 a.m. on New Year's Day.

Wishing you a joyful last day in 2009!

Time for "oilballs"

After spending a day sick in bed, I felt fit enough to go into town today. The weather was rainy and cold but still it felt good to be outside. In town I really liked this stand selling "oilballs" that are a tradition here in Holland this time of year. "Oilballs" is the literal translation of oliebollen. In English they are also referred to as Dutch donuts. They are made of dough to which sultanas and apple pieces are added. Two spoons are used to scoop a certain amount of the dough which is dropped in a deep fryer filled with hot oil. After frying for a little while they come out like this. Usually they are served with powdered sugar.
Though they looked good, my stomach wasn't up to such food. Besides that in our house the tradition is that I bake them myself on old year's day! So that's what I shall be doing tomorrow and as the family always says: "homemade, they're the best!"

Shadows in the water

Outside it's a drear and dull Sunday morning so I looked through my photo files for shadow shots. This week's photo was taken in Delft a few months ago. The little doors above the canal amazed me. I liked the way the shadows in the water make it look as if the little house continues under water!

Thanks for visiting and have a great Sunday!

Photo hunter - Twelve

It's been a while since I joined the photo hunters. Been too busy the past months or just couldn't come up with a good photo. This week's PH theme, on what we call 2nd Christmas day in Holland, brought back memories of long ago when a dear friend from Malta send me this wonderful Christmas card. I received it in 1995 and I've always cherished it. It's about the twelve days of Chrismas. On the card are five gold rings filled with babies. My friend thought I tried to reach her in children. She had 4 babes by then and I was expecting nr. 3. Both of us never made it to 5 even though they look so cute on this Christmas card. Inside there is the text of the last part of the well known Christmas Carol:

On the twelfth day of Christmas,
My true love gave to me.

Twelve drummers drumming,
Eleven pipers piping,
Ten lords a-leaping,
Nine ladies dancing,
Eight maids a-milking,
Seven swans a-swimming,
Six geese a-laying,
Five gold rings,
Four calling birds,
Three French hens,
Two turtledoves,
And a partridge in a pear tree.

Snowy basket

Basket covered with snow on our picknick table.
Only a few days ago it looked like this.

Christmas Concert

Saturday evening we went to Arnhem for a Christmas Concert of Andre Rieu and his orchestra. It was fabulous! Pity they weren't allowed to hang the chandeliers for I think that would have given it all a cosier sphere. OK the music made up for that for it was beautiful and besides that we all got these sticks, that give light, to shake and so create a sphere of our own! What a great idea.

Andre Rieu also had 400 hornblowers join in the show. Fantastic, what a sound!

My favourite song was sung by a Dutch artist. It's called: The town! WOW it gave me goose bumps, so beautiful!

We sat on the back balcony and could oversee the whole hall. A perfect place to enjoy! Here are just two pictures to give you an impression.

White world

It's soooooooooo white outside! YAK! Was supposed to go to a birthday party today but weather conditions made me stay at home. The authorities warned everybody not to take the road because of all the snow that was falling causing very slippery roads. So happy birthday dear cousin! I'll pop over another day. All this snow fell today, making outside a very white world. Here have a look, pictures are taken close to home as it couldn't appeal to me to go for a walk. Tomorrow is bad enough as I will have to go through on my way to work. Don't think it will be possible to cycle so it will be on foot! And more snow to come if the forecasts are right! YAK! Wish I could take the plane to Malta and spend Christmas and New Year in better weather!

Candle shadows

The candle in this big glass vase, which we call a wind light (literal translation), casts lovely shadows all around wishing you and all shadow shot visitors a wonderful Christmas season! Hope you have a merry one with lots of fun!

Lantern festival

Friday evening we went to the Lantern Festival only a few kilometers from where we live. It was a freezing cold evening but the route we walked with beautiful lighted lanterns was fabulous. Half way there was this stand for a delicious, warm gluhwein which warmed you up!
For the rest I'll let the photo's speak. Enjoy!

Christmas tree

Time for a Christmas tree! But what tree? Every year the furniture has to be moved round to make room for the tree. This year we didn't feel like that so we went to the garden store and returned home with a mini Christmas tree! Must say I'm really content with it. Besides the tree there are Christmas balls and candles all around the house giving our house a cosy Christmas feeling!

First driving lesson

Today was a special day as our twins turned 18! They've been looking forward to it for a long time and then most specially to their first driving lesson. For a moment it looked as if Winter would be the spoilsport but both were lucky as hardly any snow fell in this part of Holland. So the driving car pulled up twice in front of our house and both had their first driving lesson!

Winter

Just a few days ago the weather felt like Spring and now all of a sudden Winter is here! The poor rose doesn't seem to like it at all and is quickly withering away!

Roses in December

Today I heard the first Chrismas song on the radio. WOW it surprised me at first and then I realised how close Christmas is. Don't want to think about that but it also doesn't feel like that time of year. The weather is so soft compared to normal weather this time of year. Even the roses are still flowering in our garden. Amazing but beautiful! And this wasn't the only rose for there are more as you can see on the next picture. Nature must be really upset with roses flowering in December!

Shadow Shot Sunday

No shadows to catch here this Sunday. It's raining outside and the day has started very dull and gray. Good thing I captured some shadows the other day when I tried making some coloured glass shadow shots at home. Must have been anticipating for days like today!

Thanks for visiting and enjoy your Sunday!

The season has started!

This shows that the season has definitely started here in Holland. Last Saturday St Nicolas arrived in Holland by boat and he and his helpers are busy surprising kids with presents. The shops are filled with all kinds of traditional St Nicolas sweets.

When I bought hamburgers in the supermarket today they gave me these cute doll Pietjes as a gift. For those who don't know Pietjes are the helpers of St Nicolas. As there are no little, believing kids in this house the Pietjes ended up in a glass as seasonal decoration.

Static hair

OK just one more remark from our young teenager son! He is awful at times!

When our elder son arrived home yesterday evening after his badminton training, his "little" brother took one look at him, started laughing loud and asked him if the hairdryer didn't work!

Haha his hair was very static and stood out on all sides making his hair look like the ripe fruits of the Dandelion. Compared to his normal look: perfect model with lots of gel this was a laughable hairdo!

Psst just in case you're wondering: no it wasn't caused by a hairdryer but by the wind his moist hair caught cycling home!

This made my day!

On correcting our youngest son, the cyclist, today he said:

"Oh, are we playing mum today?"

Ha, as if I don't play mum everyday! Cooking, washing, cleaning the house, correcting the "kids", helping them, etc. etc. etc. .

Mmmmm, perhaps he doesn't realize that!

Silent in the grave

Just now I finished reading this book "Silent in the grave" by Deanna Raybourn. It was a mighty good read, I simply couldn't put the book away and had to finish it.

The story is about a man named Edward, who collapses at his own party and dies shortly after. His wife Julia is right there and so is this stranger called Nicholas. Later Nicholas comes to Julia's house and suggests Edwards death was not a natural one. At first Julia doesn't take this to be true and she is mad at Nicholas for suggesting such a thing. On cleaning Edward's study she comes across a threath Edward must have received just before he died and she regrets the way she reacted to Nicholas. She goes to see him and together they investigate Edward's death and try to find his murderer.

Especially liked the way the writer describes the period Julia lives in and I really liked Julia's daredevilish way that must have been very uncommon for that time. Turning the last page I was so thirsty for more that it came as a shock when I turned the last page and realized the story was finished. There was an excerpt from the next novel: "Silent in the sanctuary", also featuring Julia and Nicholas. So I hopped over to bol.com to order this book and now I can hardly wait until the postman will drop it in our P.O. box.

Shadow Shot Sunday

Last shadows on our old floor. A day later we started removing this parquet floor. We only had it for about 10 years. It was supposed to be a long lasting floor but it turned so ugly at the edges that we decided to replace it. In the meantime we have a lovely new laminate flooring.

Thanks for visiting and enjoy your Sunday!
