Photo hunter - High

Since November 2007 programs are no longer clear on our TV. Especially the sport senders were affected and my husband simply couldn't have it. So he was very busy trying to "repair" things. That was before he heard that the high digital radio and tv mast they placed only 8 km from where we live was the culprit and that we should renew all old coaxial cables in the house for a clear TV view. Good thing that wasn't such a hard job and now that's done we have a clear TV view once again!

2nd Easter Sunday

Traditionally on Easter Sunday evening there are Easter fires everywhere. That's where the kids went in the evening. The youngest took his dad along and they enjoyed getting warm close to the fire. The teenager went to another fire and never even saw the fire. She spend the whole evening in the partytent, chatting and having fun with friends. The partytent was put there for just this occasion and it was in the same area as the Easter fire. We are lucky to have a 2nd Easter Sunday on the Monday after Easter. This time the weather was cold and snowy. It even looked as if it would turn white but good thing it didn't do so. Later we heard in the news that in the North and West of Holland more snow came down.
The day was mostly spent inside watching the large watery, snowflakes falling down. Yak!
I tried to capture a picture of the birds eating from the little string of food I put between the trees for them. It is such a delight to see them hanging on all sides of that foodstring.

Easter Sunday

First thing I noticed this morning was that lovely sun shining brightly! So glad that weather forecasts were wrong and it didn't turn out to be a white Easter. The sun made me rush outside to enjoy our little garden and to see if the flowers survived the cold freezing night we had.
Yes!! The daffodils are doing fine! And so are the blue grape hyacinths.
Thought I'd give it a macro try, so here is a close-up.
After sniffing in the morning air and catching a little sun it was time for our Easter breakfast with traditionally eggs, bread buns and an Easter bread. And of course tulips to decorate the table.
Right now it's time for a cuppa coffee and some coffee cake or chocolate eggs to go with it.
Wishing whoever reads this a happy Easter Sunday!

Photo hunter - Metal

It's not very common that there are lovely constructions on chimney's here in Holland. That's why this metal chimney cap construction, with a deer on top, caught my eye the other day.

Happy Easter

Happy Easter !
It is white outside right now but not the white (snow) they meant. Looking outside our window we see a big white fog and we can hardly see the opposite side of the road. In that way it is white outside and it feels watery cold.

Easter, is nearly here again
The earth awakens once more
and we hear births singing sweetly
telling us Spring is on its way.

Daffodils and the fragrant hyacinths
Are blooming bright this time of year
Inside Easter decorations everywhere
Wishing a Happy Easter to those who visit here.

White Easter!

Really hope that the weather forecast I heard today is oh so wrong. A white Easter!!! Yak, I would really hate that. Now that Spring is only a few days away I really long for warmer, sunnier weather. But the forecasts are talking about SNOW!!! Hope they are terribly wrong.

Normally the kids in the neighbourhood search for Easter eggs on Palm Sunday but due to bad weather they had to postpone it for a week. But searching for Easter eggs in the snow is even worse as the eggs will just disappear in that white mess.

Well, we'll wait and see.

Lesson marathon

Today our youngest had a lesson marathon at school and he had to go to school from 8.00 a.m. till 8.00 p.m.. Parents and other interested people could come and attend lessons for a little gift. The kids could be sponsored by friends and family. The profit of the day is for the realisation of a library in a third world country.

So after work this afternoon I went back to primary school for a history lesson. It was fun to see the kids listening and enjoying the things the teacher was telling them.

Later in the evening our son insisted I should come back to attend an English language lesson. The smartboard was used for this lesson. By letting the kids listen to an English song the kids learned different English words. In between the teacher asked the kids if they knew the translation of the English words. A very modern method that appeals to me.

After the English lesson a famous Dutch author of kids books came to tell the class how he came to writing his books. It was very interesting. Especially hearing that books are printed in China. Within an hour machines are able to produce 10.000 copies of the same book. WOW, this really impressed me. I liked hearing how the writer came to writing the books he wrote. After this lesson the kids could get their books signed. Besides the lessons the school also made a small schoolmuseum and on the following pictures there are some things from this temporary museum.

Photo hunter - I spy

Last week while cycling past this brook on my way into town, I spied some ducks in the distance, having fun in the water. Can you see them?

Don't know why the photo above can't be enlarged but here is a closer look at "the end" of the above picture and here you can see the ducks a little better.

Bookweek

My favourite piece of furniture around the house is the bookmill we bought a few years ago when the large bookcase in the livingroom had to make place for other things. I was so happy to find this bookmill as I can fill it with books on four sides. Besides that it has wheels so you can drive it wherever you like and it can dance around.

Knowing my craze for books this won't amaze those that know me.

Tomorrow the bookweek is starting here in Holland and everyone who buys Dutch books for a minimum of EUR 11,50 gets a free book to go with it. Every year an author is asked to write the bookweek gift. This year it is called "The pianoman" written by Bernlef. It's about what quietness can do with a human being.

The bookweek's theme is this year "From old people" referring to the third age and literature. With the third age they mean people that have passed 60 years of age and still expect things from life. The kids have left home and it's the age when people stop working. What to do and how does it feel to be old anno 2008? That's what poets, writers, romantics, specialists and all other kind of people are going to let us know the coming week.

The bookweek is from 12 till 22 March.
If you have the bookweek gift and take it with you on Sunday 16 March you can train for free in Holland a whole day long!

Photo hunter - Different

Difficult theme this week: DIFFERENT. At first I didn't know what to post and then all of a sudden I remembered our kids laughing their heads off whenever we passed this field with geese because one of them is so different from the rest because he is pink!

So yesterday I became a real photo hunter and on my way into town I delibrately passed this field to take a picture. But those geese were at the far end of the field. What to do? I needed to go into town again this morning and because it was a lovely day I went by bike. To pass that field with geese I had to cycle around a little, the weather was just perfect for that. But those geese were still at the far end of the field and it looked as if they wouldn't budge. I took some pictures but is difficult to see that one is different from the rest.Lucky for me the sheep were roaming around the field and came closer to where I stood and one is so different from the rest. So this is my entry for this week's post.

The Moonlit Cage

Just now I finished reading The Moonlit Cage by Linda Holeman. A wonderful book with a touching story. I just couldn't put it away and simply had to keep on reading. Resulting in going to bed much too late.

This afternoon I wanted to continue reading but it was so cold in this house. It took some time before I realised we had problems with the central heating. In the end we had to ask a mechanic to come and fix the problem. This evening our house was nice and warm again and so a good time to finish reading this remarkable story.

Won't start another book for the time being, at least not such a thick one, for I forget everything around me when reading a book that gets me.

Turning around numbers

34, 43 just turn it around and it sounds so must younger.
Next week I won't be able to do that anymore

because 44 remains 44.
No more playing around with numbers for me the coming year
And as from next year I won't want to turn them around anymore for several years.

This evening I really felt very young participating in my first Communication lesson. Most fellow students are in their twenties!!! Imagine me between that lot. I didn't feel awkard at all. Indeed it made me feel young again.
But my I was glad that I was one of the first to have to introduce my neighbour to the group after talking 15 minutes with her. The last ones even had to stand on a chair while doing so! Oh, I am so glad that wasn't me. My heart was nearly beating out of my breast already so uncomfortable I feel when I have to speak before a group. And standing on a chair wouldn't have made it any better.

Wonder what the teacher will invent next week!
There is no escape, everyone has to join in the "fun", otherwise you won't get your certificate!

Do the speed test

Just tested my typing speed and it is not bad at all. I type 342 characters per minute, and had all 64 words correct. It got me position 208320 of 841467 on the ranking list. Not a high position but who cares.

Are you better? Give it a try and let me know.

Just one tip don't do it too often, my experience is that instead of getting better my speed went down and I made more mistakes. LOL

Photo hunter - Party

This week's photo hunter theme is party. The first thing that came to mind is again something typical Dutch (at least I think so). It's the way a 50th birthday party starts here in Holland. At 12 o'clock on your 50th birthday, family and friends place a large doll in your garden. This doll represents Abraham or Sarah as they say you see Abraham or Sarah when you turn 50. When my husband celebrated his 50th birthday we even had two Abraham's sitting in our garden! The theme kept me occupied during the week and when looking through the magazines in the supermarket I noticed one called Party.
