12 years old

Our youngest turned 12 yesterday and he had a wonderful birthday. It's not over yet for next week we will have a birthday party for 13 friends!!! Nearly all boys, can you imagine??? Guess I'll go to sleep early this week, to rest in advance (if that is possible).

Yesterday he celebrated at home, at school and even during typing class. So that meant chips, mini mars and lots of sweets.

He got lovely presents and a lot of birthday cards. Thanks to all of you who sent them. He really felt like a birthday guy!!

First Communion

Today we celebrated the First Holy Communion feast of our niece. She did her Holy Communion with a lot of other children from several schools in town. On this picture you see paintings made by the children to introduce themselves in church.
This is the church where they did their First Holy Communion.

Here you see how crowded it was in church (something you don't see very often any more here in Holland). The kids doing their Communion are sitting on both sides of the altar.
After Mass everybody awaited the new communicants outside.
For us there awaited also a delicious buffet at our nieces home.
It looked and tasted really good.

Photo hunter - thirteen (13)

This week's photo hunter theme nearly gave me a headache thinking about what to post. Driving in my Twingo the other day I had an idea. You see I love the dashboard of that little car and the way it shows the speed you are driving. So I slowed down to 13 km's an hour and bingo my photo hunter post was a fact.

The beauty of the day

Like my cyberfriend Wade over in the state Washington says in his Latest Happenings page "Take time to notice at least some beauty in each day..........". Just pop over to his page and see the abundant and colourful tulip fields they have over there. He changes his page regularly so if you visit after a week he might have removed those lovely photo's. Holland is known for the tulips but over there they seem to have so much more! LOL

Noticing the beauty of the day is no problem today for with such a clear blue sky and the sun shining bright I managed to capture that beauty in these shots.

This is my favourite season and I really love to see all the flowers bloom again and the young leaves starting to fill the trees again.

On my way to college yesterday evening I passed through this street in Velp and I just had to park my car and take some pictures. There were so many daffodils alongside that road. Really wonderful.

Last week I noticed these borders of daffodils also but I didn't stop but this time I simply had to for next week they might not bloom so abundantly anymore. Anyway here are some pictures to share with you.

You should have seen me lying down to take a picture. Good thing my kids didn't see me! LOL

International exchange week (4)

Yesterday our daughter returned home after a week in Siena. She had a great time.

In Florence David really impressed them for there were several photo's showing him off.

In fact this statue is a copy of Michelangelo's famous statue David and stands in front of the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence.

Before taking the plane yesterday morning they had some time over and they took the bus to see the leaning tower of Pisa.

Good thing they left the rain behind in Pisa for when they arrived back home the sun was shining bright! They must have packed it firmly in their suitcase and brought it back with them. We didn't mind at all!! Let it shine!

Photo hunter - twist(ed)

Twisted liquorice, yammie, yammie! Really delicious. The red one is favourite under kids and tastes a little sweeter. The brown sort has a salmiac flavour. Mmmmmmmmmmmm once you start eating you can't stop!

Post from Siena

Today the post brought this lovely card from Siena telling us that our daughter is very glad to be in Italy. She is really enjoying herself and the weather is nice and sunny, already giving her a brown tan!

It seems she also learned a little Italian for the card starts with Ciao! and ends with Saluti!

So glad to read that she is having a good time but I am also glad that she will return home tomorrow. Today I also received an sms message telling me not to prepare a pasta meal tomorrow evening!???

Window-pane garden

It looks like our window-pane has become a little garden and our youngest son is the gardener! According to him this green stuff shall become delicious tomatoes. First they have to grow a little before he will plant them outside in our garden. There the tomatoes will really start growing and they will turn out to be red and delicious.

Then there is that other stuff growing on cotton buds. He calls it cress and says it is delicious in sandwiches and salads. We already told him to eat it himself as he is such a good eater (but not!!!). He doesn't even eat tomatoes so why he is growing all these things I don't know except that he is enjoying himself and taking real good care of his little garden.

International exchange week (3)

Our daughter and her classmates are having a good time in Toscane. Yesterday they went to Florence and must have seen the Ponte Vecchio the famous bridge in Florence (picture I found on internet on the right).

Today they shall spend the day in Siena. They will visit the Siena Jazz Asscociation for a music workshop. Later they will stroll through the open-air market. In the afternoon they planned a visit to the Santa Maria alla Scala museum and do assigned workshops there.

Tomorrow they wil go to Colle di Val d'Elsa - the crystal capital of Italy.

On Friday, their last day in Siena they will spend the morning at school and in the afternoon they are free to go shopping or they can visit the medieval town of San Gimignano.

Everything sounds great to me and I would have loved to be there to. Perhaps one day we shall visit Toscane. Really hope so.

Feels like Spring

Yippie, it finally feels like Spring outside with the sun shining bright and comfortable temperatures.

It was a delight to be able to sit outside with a nice cuppa tea. Really hope it stays like this the coming week.

Our daughter smst that she is enjoying her time in Siena and when she smst she was having a drink on the Piazza del Campo in Siena. Glad to hear she is feeling better for she was sick yesterday.

Photo hunter - glass

This week's photo hunters theme is glass and it made me think. Enough glass around the house but I wanted something different and it made me think of this glass building half way into town. Today on my way into town I stopped near that glass building to take some pictures. It was difficult to get a nice picture for there is a gate all around the premises.

The picture above is taken from the front and you can see the front of the building in the distance. Below is a better picture of the front and two pictures of the side. All the buildings on these premises are now for sale but not long ago they used to house all kind of sculptures and that's what that glass building was used for too. There used to be all kind of statues and other things for sale inside this glass house. I've always liked the way it was build and hope you like it as my photo hunter entry for this week's theme.

International exchange week (2)

Last year in november the school our daughter attends had their first interational exchange week for this scholastic year (click here to see my blogpost of november).

Today our daughter and her classmates left home to spend a week in Italy with the same students that came here last year. She has been looking forward to going for a long time and today they finally left.

The bus came early this morning to pick them up and they shall drive to Frankfurt Hahn Airport. That's about 4 hours by road from where we live. There they shall be taking a plane to Pisa in Italy. The flight takes about 1 hour 25 minutes. From Pisa they travel by train to Siena where they should be arriving this evening at around 20.15 hour. A long journey. Wouldn't have minded going with them for the weather in Siena must surely be better then what we have here. Such a dreary, rainy day!

Well just in case you are interested and want to follow what they shall be doing in Siena, click here and go to the website they should be filling the coming week.

Ciao, ciao to all of you! Have fun and bring some sun back with you!

Flexible rose

The other day I got a flexible rose as a mould for baking cakes. It looks really nice.Today I decided to give it a try and I baked a honey cake in that mould and it came out just perfect. Tomorrow morning it will have cooled down enough to try a piece with the coffee. Oh I am looking forward to that already.
