The small woman

Just now I finished reading The small woman by Alan Burgess.
A biography of Gladys Aylward, a missionary responsible for leading many children over the mountains of northern China to safety during the Japanese occupation of World War II.

Though small she was a great woman!!
She was born in England and wanted to become a missionary in China. She did certain exams to be allowed to go to China for the mission but she didn't pass. She so wanted to go that she finally decided to go on her own. It was a difficult passage but finally she managed to reach China.

There she travelled to a little place in the mountains to go and help an elder missionary woman. When that woman died she stayed there and became one of the villagers. She even learnt to speak fluent Chinese. She adopted many children and later helped them to cross the mountains to rescue them from the Japanese. It was a daring trip with nearly 100 children, even more so because Gladys was ill during that trip making it very hard on her. Luckily she made it and brought the children to safety.
