For several days now I have been trying to make a picture of a robin that seems to have settled somewhere in our garden for I see this bird very often on the birdfood table we placed outside. But the little bugger won't let me take it's picture!! Just now I tried again but not a bird to be seen on the picture.

So I looked him up on Wikipedia and this is exactly what he or she looks like. On Wikipedia it says that robins in continental Europe are more wary and I must say that certainly goes for this one. I am delighted that this robin visits our garden every now and then.

There are also many house sparrows in our garden and they are also difficult to take a picture of. Wikipedia was helpful here too and this is what they look like. In Holland the house sparrow is considered an endangered species, so we are quiet lucky to be living in an area where we still see many house sparrows. The house sparrows in our garden have their nest under the roof tiles of our neighbours house which is quiet old and so the construction of the roof is not as well done as that of newer houses where sparrows will find no space to build a nest.

The English Language

See here what I came across while surfing the world wide web. As I am writing in this blog also to keep up my English it was fun reading this stuff and to recognise certain things in it very well.

Have you ever wondered why we foreigners have trouble with the English Language?

Let's face it English is a funny language.
There is no egg in the eggplant
No ham in the hamburger
And neither pine nor apple in the pineapple.
English muffins were not invented in England
French fries were not invented in France.

The English take their language for granted
But if you examine its paradoxes you will find that
Quicksand takes you down slowly
Boxing rings are square
And a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

If writers write, how come fingers don't fing.
If the plural of tooth is teeth
Shouldn't the plural of phone booth be phone beeth
If the teacher taught,
Why didn't the preacher praught.

If a vegetarian eats vegetables
What the heck does a humanitarian eat!?
Why do people recite at a play
Yet play at a recital?
Park on driveways and
Drive on parkways

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy
Of a language where a house can burn up as
It burns down
And in which you fill in a form
By filling it out
And a bell is only heard once it goes!

English was invented by people, not computers
And it reflects the creativity of the human race
(Which of course isn't a race at all)

That is why
When the stars are out they are visible
But when the lights are out they are invisible
And why it is that when I wind up my watch
It starts
But when I wind up this observation,
It ends.

Blog worth

My blog is worth $2,258.16.
How much is your blog worth?

What happened? A few days ago my blog was worth nothing!!! LOL!

Today was a lovely day. The sun shone most of the day and the temperature was not too cold. So in the morning I worked outside in our garden and in the afternoon we took our bikes and went to do some shopping about 7 km from where we live.

That's where I saw this silicone baking form and as I had thrown away the old rusty one I decided to buy this silicone thing. Of course I wanted to try it out immediately so we bought some flour, eggs and butter. At home I started baking immediately and as it said on the box NON STICK I didn't grease the baking form.

Well the cake looked and smelled delicious but getting it out of this form was quiet a disaster for it stuck to the bottom. Finally I just tried peeling of the form but of course bits and pieces remained stuck to the form. So I guess I should have greased the form and that's what I shall do next time.

With a nice cup of coffee the cake did taste good anyway and it didn't look blueisch!

Addicted to internet?

According to the test below I am for 73% addicted to the internet! Well I guess I knew that for I can't imagine life without internet anymore. So I didn't really need the proof but did the the test anyway and see here the result.

There is so much to discover and learn on the internet and internet makes the world much smaller and news travels very fast.

Even yesterday my good news travelled over the internet faster then here in the area and so one of the first to congratulate me was Sabine, who lives in Gozo. Thanks Sabine. My boss congratulated me just before you did but that was because he was sitting opposite me when I received the e-mail.

You Are 73% Addicted to the Internet

In your opinion, life without the internet is hardly worth living.
Could be, but you probably need a bit more fresh air and sunshine to think clearly.

Good news

YEAH, I got the result and I passed for business economy part 1 with a 6 !! Not a very high mark but who cares, at least I don't have to do it over again and now I can go further with part 2 of the book, exam in June 2007.

Thursday, January 25, 2007

This is about my mood right now after spending the whole day behind the computer waiting for the result of my exam to be mailed to me.

Well they promised to mail it 5 working days before the postal sending and if I counted correct the result should have been mailed today. The results will be posted on 1st February. So counting back 5 working days brings me to today.

Good thing I read the forum and saw that more students expected the results to come today so I must have counted correct but the results didn't come!!! They did manage to send a newsletter and when that came in I thought YES, the result, but no..... just a newsletter. Well I guess there is nothing else to do but go to sleep now and hope somebody is working tonight so that the results will be mailed tomorrow early in the morning.

Just an impression

This afternoon we decided to go for a little bike ride to get a breath of fresh air and to have a look what damage the storm has caused in our area. The road we cycled along has been closed for two days to clear the road and to cut branches that hang dangerously over the road. We were lucky (not really) for we were caught by heavy wind and lots of rain just as we were half way up this road. We had front wind so it was very difficult to remain on the bike. In the end we were soaking wet and when we arrived home the kids laughed on seeing us! We looked like two drowned cats!

So here is just a small impression of what wind force over 10 can do to trees. We were even more impressed by the force of the storm!

Here we were soaking wet. The sun was shining again and it looked wonderful everywhere we looked but after taking these pictures the sky behind us was getting very dark again, so we cycled home very quickly!

We were lucky to reach our house before it started raining again! (Just in case you are thinking this is our house: NO it isn't!)

No storm damage here but just a nice picture.

Storm damage

With this stormy weather last Thursday a corner roof tile fell down from our roof and several tiles were loosened. Just after I placed my post here on Thursday the weather turned really awful and outside we couldn't see a thing just a large white fog filled with rain and a very hard wind going with it. The wind was howling around the house making us feel very uncomfortabel. And then all of a sudden we heard something falling very hard. When the weather had calmed down a little we went outside to have a look and saw that a roof tile had fallen down. Luckily it fell in the soil and so it didn't break.

Well anyway we were lucky on the whole for many trees fell on houses and that happened here in town also. The owners weren't even allowed to enter their house anymore and they had to find accomodation elsewhere. Also in the woods the storm has caused lots of damage and many woods and parks are closed to public.

Roads are also closed because of fallen trees and even traffic lights are not working anymore for the storm just turned them in the wrong direction or broke them down all together.

Well for us today was recovery day and a friendly next door neighbour wasn't afraid to climb up on the roof to put the tile back on, this time with lots of cement to keep it right in place.

We are having very stormy weather today! And it isn't over yet. Rain and hard winds make it very, very stormy outside. In fact there is a weather alarm on, meaning that if you don't have to go outside you shouldn't.

A few days ago I imagined Spring to be coming early but right now it looks as if Autumn has returned. It is so dark outside! Due to this weather already many accidents have happened.
We are lucky for we don't live close to sea where the storm is at its worst!
Funny weather we are having as this is not at all normal for this time of year.
Just now I picked up the kids from school. Normally they come and go on their own but with this stormy weather we decided to play taxidriver!
As you can see on these pictures the best place to be is inside with a nice cup of tea!

New Year Party

Yesterday I went to the new year party of my work. It was in a nice restaurant just outside Zeddam, not far from where we live.

We were welcomed by open air fires and inside we were awaited with champagne.

After wishing everybody a happy new year the warm/cold buffet was opened and there was enough to eat and drink for everybody. While sitting at the tables and chatting with your colleagues there was a magician walking around doing table magic. He was really wonderful. For example he would show you a packet of cards and let you choose one and then he would reshuffle the pack and then he would say: "Isn't that your card lying under that glass"? And yes it would be and you never even noticed him putting the card there.

He would also manage to take your watch from your puls without you ever realising him doing so. And while watching him do table magic he would come up with your watch somewhere. Well it was hilarious and quiet ununderstandable how he managed to do so. Guess it is the speed with which he shows you things. Well he was good for lots of laughter so everybody had fun.

When going home we all got a rucksack filled with things to eat. Thanks to the person who choose it. It was a lovely new year present!

Time to say goodbye

A few posts ago I promised to share some photo's with you of our Wiz, not knowing that it would be my last musical with this group. Today I stopped as a volunteer with this group and I must say I am relieved because it cost me loads of time. On the other hand I am sad too for I really enjoyed being part of this fantastic group of people.
This is the theater were the musicals are performed and here you see an empty theater as this is the final rehearsal. Being part of the group I was able to attend all rehearsals and I really enjoyed seeing everybody putting the last bits and pieces into the right place.

The group always works with a life orchestra and I really liked watching and listening to their rehearsals. I will surely miss being able to do so.

The next pictures show only a tiny bit of our Wiz and I must say it was lovely. The colours, the lights, the music, etc. all just perfect and it was a delight to be part of this group.

Here you see Dorothy approaching the scarecrow who is being annoyed by several crows

Dorothy and the tin man

Dorothy and the lion

This is the whole cast of this musical. It was fun to be part of the group.

But the proverb says: there is a time to come and a time to go!

And this time it is goodbye!

Early Spring?

Today I noticed the first signs of Spring in our garden for crocuses are already flowering. Wow, lovely sight for I adore Spring, in fact it is the favourite part of the year for me. But good grieve it did come early this year and hopefully it stays that way. Sorry to all those people that do like the winter season.

It is not that I don't like the seasons but I just don't like the winter season especially the coldness and the darkness that go with that part of the year. There are also some nice things that go with winter, like snow and ice and the fun that goes with that, but not too long. This year I really hope we won't be getting that stuff in March when Spring is really expected as I always look forward to enjoying the warmth of the sun on several days in March.

In the years I lived on Gozo I didn't miss the seasons for I never knew what I missed but after moving back to Holland I got to know and appreciate the seasons.
Here are some more pictures to show that it looks like Spring is approaching very early this year!
On the picture above you see snowdrops popping their heads above the ground. Funny that they are not flowering yet for normally they are the first bulbs to do so. On the right you see daffodils coming up.

Skating in Doetinchem

This is the centre of Doetinchem. During this holiday season they made a large skating rink for everybody who wants to skate.

It is a pretty sight and many enjoy skating there for an hour or more. Now that the Dutch climate seems to be getting warmer and warmer a real ice rink is far away. Especially this winter the weather is still very warm and it doesn't look like we will get real winter temperatures. But you never know. Last year, all of a sudden we were able to skate on real ice and I must say it was fun. Won't tell you how I skate for guess you would probably laugh your head off.

Yesterday our son wanted to go skating so we went to Doetinchem and while we did some shopping he skated on this ice rink.

First he had to buy a ticket at the ticketboot. Besides the ticket he got a pair of skates which he could use. Here you see him enjoying himself very much. I must say he is a good skater and still knows very well how to do it. He fell a few times but was also able to make a quick turn on his skates.

Maria and Gozo

When walking through a bookshop in Doetinchem this magazine caught my eye. Maria, the mother of Jesus, has a special place in my heart as the Salesian Sisters in Gozo made Mary Help of Christians well known to us. In their convents and outside there are many lovely statues of Mary Help of Christians. In fact I always carry a little medal of Mary Help of Christians with me, her statue stands on my bedside table and her picture hangs in our house.

In Gozo you can find Maria everywhere, many houses have her image near their frontdoor, you can find her in many streetcorners, her statue watches over Ramla beach and in every church you will find a special corner dedicated to Maria.

So for me Maria shall in a way always be connected to Gozo and that's what made this magazine even more special for there were several pages dedicated to Maria in Gozo. Here are some pictures to show you two pages of the magazine.

Just now I realised that today it is exactly 32 years ago that we moved to Gozo and I still remember parts of that day very well. Especially the part after arriving at Luqa airport. For those who know Malta it won't be amazing that I shall never forget the first ride, by minibus, over the island to Marfa and crossing over to Gozo, in the dark, on the Jylland.

Angelina's Ghost

With the rainy weather we had today I was wondering what I could write about in my blog and as it didn't stop raining the whole day it wasn't easy.

But see here what the postman brought today: a late christmas present and such a lovely one!!

THANKS SABINE for sending this my way. You made my day today and I am very glad with Angelina's Ghost for though I read the preprint version it's always better to read the real book and wow it does look lovely with that picture of a narrow street in Victoria on the cover.

The real Gozo Plus looks fabulous too and good thing you made it possible to be printed again and to be dropped on every doorstep in Gozo. Very sophisticated magazine with interesting articles, a nice layout and sharp pictures. Thanks for sending that along too.

Good thing we bougth this lazy chair this week so that's were you will find me this evening !

For those of you reading this and wondering what I am rambling on about just click here for more information about Angelina's Ghost and click here for Gozo Plus.

When we were in Scheveningen I took some photo's to share with you. Here you see "the Pier".

Scheveningen, a part of The Hague, is the largest beach resort of the Netherlands which is visited yearly by more than ten millions visitors from both home and foreign countries. The long, broad promenade and the Pier have many attractions and public places.

The Pier, together with the Kurhaus, is the important eye-catcher of Scheveningen. From the Pier you have a splendid view over both the North sea and the Scheveningen promenade. The promenade on the Pier has two floors, a covered one and an open air promenade. At the end of the Pier you will find a restaurant, a casino, a childrens playgound, Bungy Jump and Sling shot. In front of the Pier is the Kurhaus: hotel and restaurant, built in 1885, in neo-renaissance style.

This is the Kurhaus as seen from the seaside.

And here is the Kurhaus as seen from the otherside.

Beauty and the Beast

For those who read my blog regularly it must be known by now that I am a musical fan.

Last Saturday my mother, my daughter and I went to see the musical Beauty and the Beast in the Circustheater in Scheveningen.

It was a beautiful musical. The decors and the costumes were fantastic. The music was wonderful and the actors did a terrific job especially Lumiere was a big favourite of mine.

It was so much fun to see plates, cutlery, a teapot, a teacup, a pepper and salt set, a clock and an opener dancing and singing over the stage.

We had a lovely afternoon and it was pure delight to see this musical and I am very glad we went to see it. It was pronounced Musical of the year 2006. So far it has been the biggest travelling production in Holland and it was played in many theaters.

Due to its great succes it continued playing in the Circustheater. On 13 January 2007 Beauty and the Beast can be seen for the last time and after that the Circustheater will be made ready for Tarzan, the musical.

Happy New Year

Time seems to fly for I still remember celebrating the Milenium year 2000 and now already 7 years have passed.
I wish everybody all the best for this new year in front of us. Now I shall go and use that skipping rope for I think I need it!
